Title NeuraSearch Lab: Bridging Minds and Machines in Information Retrieval
Abstract In this talk, I will share the research journey of the NeuraSearch Laboratory, where we explore the intersection of Brain-Machine Interfaces, Neuroscience, and Information Retrieval (IR). Traditional IR systems rely on observable interactions to infer users’ needs, overlooking the rich cognitive signals that underpin information-seeking behaviour. Our work investigates how neurophysiological data can transform IR, from understanding the neural correlates of search and decision-making to integrating brain signals into retrieval models and developing proactive systems that anticipate user intent. I will highlight key findings, current projects, and the challenges and opportunities ahead as we work toward a new generation of cognitively aware IR systems.
Bio Dr Yashar Moshfeghi is Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Strathclyde, where he founded and directs the NeuraSearch Laboratory. He is also a Principal Investigator at Strathclyde’s Neurotechnology Centre, leading its research in Artificial Intelligence and Brain-Machine Interfaces. His work has played a central role in establishing a new interdisciplinary field at the intersection of Information Retrieval, Neuroscience, and Artificial Intelligence. He focuses on developing cognitively aware systems that leverage neurophysiological signals to understand, model, and predict human information needs, advancing the way intelligent systems interact with human cognition. His contributions have been recognised through multiple prestigious awards from academia and industry.
